TRACKMANIA 2: CANYON

Entering “TrackMania 2” is a very simple matter. The single player game consists of 65 tracks, most of which are unlocked by winning medals. You load a track, start your engine, and then continue to play until you set a time you are satisfied with.

If you are only interested in chasing points, this game is very good, although it is far from an obvious game. Each track is professionally designed to take into account the leaderboard. Pinning the perfect racing route to get the best time requires practice and experimentation, because you have to figure out how to cut corners and start drifting in advance.

Learning the best route in stages is by no means a chore. Most tracks last from 18 to 40 seconds; they are short sprints from A to B that take you around hairpin bends and over dizzying jumps. You often find yourself driving on walls or drifting vertically on quarter pipes. Although these stages are short, at every point you are encouraged to stay on a particular track and chase the desire for the best time. There are bronze, silver and gold medals for each track, and an official time can be set. These times can be challenged every 5 minutes, and the timer in the lower right corner will count down until your next attempt. Setting an official time will reward you with skill points based on your overall performance and help you rank online.

Racing on the track is fun and brisk, partly thanks to the super handling and simple learning curve when drifting. There is only one type of car, so the focus is on learning the track, not worrying about which vehicle to use. This gives TrackMania 2 Canyon a puzzle game feel, just like a racing car, and when a friend beats your time, you know that he is driving the same car as you, which is really great. The keyboard control is tight, and the subtle manipulation and wide drift are easily pulled away with the arrow keys. It is even better to use a gamepad, because full simulation control is very suitable for games. You often make twitch adjustments to your racing circuit, and any control method is beneficial.

Trying to set the best time can be frustrating, but it is usually done in an “again” way. Although there are several tracks that are really annoying, because the end of some longer tracks is a jump or a turn, it is easy to make you loop. But the immediacy of restarting makes the most annoying track reasonable. The less fun is the lap race, which occurs every five tracks. These five lap games are decent enough, but if you want to get a gold medal, then when you mess up at the end of the fifth lap, you will feel a little hard. The variety and length of the A-to-B track make it more entertaining.

There are no physical opponents on the track. You can choose a ghost from the preset AI ghosts, your favorite replays, or the replays of people in your friends list who have created a better official time than you, to play. There are usually three cars on the track: you, the ghost you chose to race with, and the ghost you last tried. Multiplayer games are similar. Although you can see other cars, they appear in the form of ghosts.

The main mode is time attack. You and different opponents play on a series of tracks. Within 5 minutes, you can set the best time. It is both an interesting game and a learning tool, which allows you to see the racing route taken by the previous car without worrying about overtaking.

There are other modes, such as Laps and Cup, where you can directly play against opponents, but it is almost impossible to find a server to do anything except Time Attack. Fortunately, you can choose to create your own server and invite friends. These multiplayer game options can also be played locally, in turns, or on split screens.

TrackMania 2 focuses on the community. Through this interface, you can see your current ranking and total leaderboard, you can even read the game’s forum. When the time set by your friends exceeds your time, you will receive a message reminder, by clicking on it, you can immediately challenge their ghosts. This is a neat user interface idea, although it can make some corrections; it is not the easiest thing to browse, only after playing for a while, you will fully master it. This is strangely contrary to the game’s accessibility.

Customization and user-created content have always been the main theme of TrackMania, and here is no exception. There is a track editor that allows you to create tracks and share them online, as well as a series of paint tools to customize your car. Thankfully, the track editor provides a simple editing mode, as well as a more complex advanced mode, which was difficult to adapt to at first.

The same is true of the playback editor, which is reminiscent of professional editing software. Fortunately, each audio track also has a default replay camera angle, so it is entirely possible to save decent movies (which can also be shared or converted to video) without editing capabilities.

The complexity of some functions is the main reason why “TrackMania 2: Canyon” may dislike some people. There is no doubt: The benefit to the game is that it is customizable and open to modification. But unless you are ready to go to an external website to find new tracks, or you have image editing or 3D modeling skills to make decals and new cars, you may feel that you haven’t got as much from the game as possible.

Few more advanced component aspects are handled in the game. Grabbing a new track requires you to find it on the Internet, or receive a file from someone else, and extract it to the correct folder, which can be accessed by launching the program. The same is true for cars and most official time replays, which will be downloaded if you challenge through the buddy list. Thankfully, there is an option to create a “package” that can be shared, which contains multiple tracks and cars, so each individual file does not have to be downloaded separately.

Nonetheless, here is still a very easy time trial game. Given the low price of “TrackMania 2: Canyon”, even if you are only interested in vanilla single-player and multiplayer modes, it is a good choice. This is also a good-looking game. When you race on the ground of the canyon, dusty, exaggerated damage models cause the car to bend and bend into glorious wreckage. Thankfully, quite basic background music can be replaced with your own music, and custom maps can also be attached with their own songs.

TrackMania 2: Canyon is a game that tries to satisfy as many players as possible, even if the gap between simple and advanced is quite large. Whether you invest heavily in the community or simply race on different tracks, set some time, and save some sweet-looking replays, the game is full of fun. Although it is difficult to shake some things, such as content sharing, it can be less tricky, but it is also difficult to ignore the potential of community expansion. For those who like their racers to be more grounded and more advanced, this is not a real game, but it can make you gain a lot, even if you just replay it over and over again The same track, trying to beat the devil by a few centimeters.

TrackMania 2: Canyon clearly stated that participation is the most important, but it proves that participation and then winning is a stimulus.
